Plumbing Work in the UK for Homes

No one wants to deal with plumbing problems and emergencies in their home.  It’s inconvenient and stressful.  However, one way to improve the situation is to understand the basics of having plumbing work completed.  After all, being able to find the right plumber is a big part of the battle.

Do Plumbers Need to be Trained?

While most of us would want to hire a plumber with extensive experience and training, not everyone claiming to be a plumber fits that description.  In fact, they don’t have to.  The UK plumbing industry is not tightly regulated so practically anyone with a tool belt can call themselves a plumber.

As a result of this lack of regulation, untrained people can do most of the plumbing services needed in the UK.  You can even do most of the tasks yourself if you feel comfortable doing so.

However, some communities are passing laws that do require plumbers to meet specific standards before they are permitted to do work in that area.

Building Regulations & Registered Workmen

If you are having work done on your home, you need to put together a plan and have that plan approved.  Generally, as part of that plan you will need to contract with registered workmen.  If any of the contractors you hire end up violating the plans once they have been approved, then they could find themselves in court.

Even if your installation or plumbing project doesn’t require the approval of plans, you are always better off using registered workmen because you can be assured of their experience.

Quality Components from Suppliers

Choosing a qualified plumber is only half of the issue, however.  If you want your plumbing work to be top quality, you also need to make sure that you purchase and use high quality components from suppliers.

The best way to choose these components is by doing your own research.  Look at reviews and ask for recommendations from your plumber or your plumber contractor.

Training Required for Plumbers

Plumbers in the UK can obtain a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 2 and Level 3 in plumbing.  What this means is that you will have work experience, as well as professional training in mechanical engineering services.

At level 3, plumbers-in-training take courses in working with water regulations, unvented hot water systems, and gas safety.

Plumbers working on gas related jobs must be CORGI registered
Here is what the The Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (IPHE)says about this: CORGI stands for the Council of Registered Gas Installers which is a regulatory body for those working with gas. It is illegal to work on gas without being CORGI registered. CORGI registered gas installers have passed recognised exams to prove their competence. Always look for a CORGI logo and ID badge when employing someone to work on gas.

Parts of the Home Where Plumbing is Required

When you are looking at areas where plumbing work might be needed in your home, don’t just think about the toilets and bathrooms.  Although those are common locations for plumbing work, they aren’t the only areas where you may need a plumber’s expertise.

Your kitchen also has plumbing requirements.  You may also need a plumber to help you prepare sprinklers or other systems in your garden.  Additionally, plumbers trained in residential gas safety can also help you with your central heating.

Popular Lighting Styles in the UK Today

When it comes to lighting, there are so many choices that it may take you awhile to decide what kind you want to use. The different types have a unique and beautiful style of their own.

Let us look at some of the types of lighting fixtures that are available to help you make a choice for a new look to the room of your choice.

Chandeliers

There are various types of chandeliers. The crystal chandelier is one that is very popular. They can be used in a formal dining room or a living area. They are made from different materials to be affordable for anyone’s budget. For a real crystal chandelier, Swarovski or Preciosa crystals are a couple of the best available. They will add glamour to the room of your choice with their shimmering crystals.

If you are on a budget, you can purchase a chandelier made with glass or acrylic. Another great option for those on not too strict of a budget, is the coordinating chandelier, wall sconces, and even a mirror. You can redo a whole room centered on your chandelier. A beautiful look in chandeliers to give your room old world charm is a chandelier with the finish of your choice. One choice would be a bronze finish with an oak leaf motif, add the crystal droplets and you are off to a great start.

A couple more choices that look great and are available in a smaller size if the room you are lighting is not a large one is alabaster or wrought iron. Both of these are easy to accessorize and are not hard on the budget. Alabaster with antique brass accents is a look that is sure to brighten any room. Wrought iron with shimmering crystals and candelabra lighting is a choice that you will not regret.

Fittings

The fittings you use are another way of adding a finished look to your room. Switches are one way of coordinating all the lighting in the room. The wide variety available includes brass, chrome, gold, antique gold, nickel, and many more depending on your choice of room décor.

Nothing sets off a room like your lighting. When you add the switches, think about what you are using as your main lighting source. If you have plain fixtures, you can use the plastic switches. The choice of colors will make the room come together. For a kitchen, nothing gives that clean, sharp look like accenting with white. White switches, white light will give you the lighting you need in this room while you are preparing the meals.

In your main living area, you may prefer the look of nickel. However, many people prefer gold or an antique gold. This looks great if you have a chandelier with the same basic color. The color and style that you choose really depends on what you are using in your other lighting sources for that room.

Many designers today are opting for chrome or brass. This looks very modern if it fits your room. However, if this is the type that you choose, you may have to redecorate. The look has to be coordinated to make it work. With all the wonderful choices we have today, it should not be difficult to find the right look for your home.

Electrical work in UK

Electrical Work on Houses in the UK

If you live in the UK and want to have any type of electrical work done in your house or even in your garden, new rules apply. They have been in effect since January 2005. For any type of work done in your home or yard, Building Regulation approval is essential.

What does this mean for me, the homeowner who wants to have a renovation or a new service installed. Well, it means that you must have a certificate of compliance which is outlined by the Electrical Regulations or Building Regulations.

If you do not comply with the law and have the proper certifications, it could end up costing you. This is considered a violation of the law if not properly followed to the letter. If you own your home and decide to sell it, you will be asked to supply the paperwork for any work done to prove that you followed the rules. This applies if you apply for a mortgage as well.

The only electrical work that you do not have to have certification for is any work connected to a 13A plug, non-major replacements of electrical switches or sockets, and if you are replacing one cable which is not a major one. You can also add extra lighting fixtures to circuits that are already there as long as they are not in a kitchen, bathroom, or an outside area, such as a pool or sauna.

If you have the work done by a registered installer, they take care of making sure that everything is taken care of when it comes to the Building Regulations and the Council. Should you decide to go this way, you will not have to pay a fee.

However, if you hire an unregistered installer, you will have to get the Building Registration ok for the job you want done. This is not to say that you cannot choose an electrician who is not a registered installer. But he must prove to the Council’s Building Control Service that he is capable of performing the job. If the electrical work is carried out by an unregistered electrician or is a DIY installation you may be required to have the work inspected and tested by a registered electrician .

If you use an unregistered electrician, it would be best to take an insurance-backed guarantee out to protect your interest should anything go wrong. Another reason for hiring a registered electrician is to know the materials they will be using will not be in any way damaged or not up to the expectations that are required for installing.

Since all inspectors have a certain criteria that must be met, it is best to discuss the business with the help that you have hired. Make sure they only use the best materials and the safest that is available.

The regulations have been tightened for the business of installing electrical components in residential housing, one reason must be to reduce the number of deaths and accidents from faulty wiring jobs.

Bathroom styles

Popular Bathroom Styles in the UK

The style of your bathroom is going to depend on a few things that you will need to think about before tackling the job of remodeling or building if this is a new home.

1) Space - How big is your bathroom. Is it small or large?
2) Ownership - Is the home you are remodeling yours or are you renting?
3) Budget - You need to figure out how much you are going to spend without going over what your budget.
4) Décor - What type of bathroom do you prefer?

When you get these questions answered, you have a plan. From there you can start purchasing the items that you need for your new bathroom. There are three styles of bathrooms. When you get ready to decide you will find that contemporary, traditional, and a combination of both are the choices you have.

Contemporary

If you decide to choose a contemporary bathroom, the style that is being used elsewhere in the world dictates what is popular. These bathrooms may feature all the innovations that have been put to use in bathrooms in the last several months. One such choice is a sharply defined, straight lines and simple shapes, with very little detail, if any.

The contemporary bathroom is much easier to clean because of the plain construction of the bathroom appliances. However, this does tend to make a lot of bathrooms look very similar. One way of breaking up the monotony of the bathrooms is to use glass sinks. This adds detail and is in strong contrast to the other bathroom furnishings. These are usually mostly chrome and white.

Traditional

Traditional bathrooms are normally what people install in older homes that they want the period look to reflect the age of the home. These were replaced with contemporary bathroom fixtures after the 1960’s when the look was updated for a more modern bathroom.

The Victorian style bathrooms are still in existence with high or low level cisterns. These are mainly used by people who want to maintain a certain look in their homes. For the most part unless a traditional bathroom is desired, most styles reflect either a contemporary or a mixture of contemporary and traditional.

The styles preferred by most people in the U K are the contemporary and traditional look. This works by combining for example, the taps on a contemporary sink with wood toilet seats. When combining styles you must use caution because certain items do not look good together. The traditional style mixed with modern accents will not achieve the look that you are trying to achieve. The bathtub is another place where people go wrong. The size must fit the bathroom. If it is too small or too large, it definitely will make your bathroom look out of kilter. A Jacuzzi definitely will not fit a small bathroom and most people prefer them outside anyway.

The floor is another place where people sometimes go wrong. Ceramic is becoming very popular because it is easy to clean and makes more sense in a bathroom than something that is harder to take care of due to the water. Many people still use the old style tile but the popularity has decreased since ceramic tile took its place.
